There’s a saying that employees don’t leave companies, they leave managers – and today they are leaving more often than ever.

 

Managers tend to blame their turnover problems on everything under the sun, while ignoring the crux of the matter: people don’t leave jobs; they leave managers. The sad thing is that this can easily be avoided. All that’s required is a new perspective and some extra effort on the manager’s part.

Major Reasons of Leaving 

  • They Overwork People
  • They Don’t Recognize Contributions and Reward Good Work
  • They Don’t Care about Their Employees
  • They Don’t Honor Their Commitments
  • They Hire and Promote the Wrong People
  • They Don’t Let People Pursue Their Passions
  • They Fail to Develop People’s Skills
  • They Fail to Engage Their Creativity
  • They Fail to Challenge People Intellectually

If Organization wants best people to stay, they need to think carefully about how to treat employee. While good employees are as tough as nails, their talent gives them an abundance of options. Company need to make them want to work.

How to Retain

The best way to retain employees is to stay in touch with what they’re thinking. Are they happy with their work? Are their needs for challenge, belonging, development, and meaningful work met? Do they have the communication, problem solving, feedback, and recognition that they need from their boss?

  • Improve relationship with Boss & Co-workers
  • Assign Interesting & challenging task
  • Opportunities to use skills and abilities
  • Contribution of work to the organization’s business goals
  • Autonomy and independence
  • Organization’s financial stability
  • Healthy overall corporate culture
  • Management’s recognition of employee job performance

 

They leave because management has failed to meet their needs on one level or another.  Either the interpersonal relationship between them is counterproductive, their potential is not being challenged, or the ceiling on their growth posibility in the company is lower than what they expected.

 

 If it be for one of these reasons, then management has failed to satisfy and retain probably one of the most promissing of employees.

Yep, the number one reason why people leave* is because of their immediate manager. 

Also, bad employees tend to stay because they know they will struggle to get a job elsewhere, and staying is comfortable.  Good people tend to want to further their career and will move to do it.   In other words, good people are harder to keep and more likely to leave.
