Would you understand one of your employees if they have been denied a raise/promotion & were rude? What would you do to change their behaviour?

I will understand employees who were rude after being denied a raise or promotion. Raise and promotion can motivate employees to go the extra mile but I will make them understand that being denied of such privilege is not something that they must be discouraged of but rather should use this as a challenge for them to perform better and set goals for themselves to monitor their progress towards their jobs. Showing them that I understand them is the first step in changing their behavior. Pacifying them will be difficult but I will start the process by showing them their strengths and weaknesses and more importantly the areas where they can improve and may give them better chances of getting the raise and promotion next time. I also need to give motivations to uplift their spirits to work harder and better towards their jobs.

1. Reflect upon what failures of leadership or management on my part had led to this situation.

2. Start taking steps to fix these failures and make sure they don't happen again

3. Address any fallout that might affect other employees

4. Talk privately to the employee concerned about what happened

         a) to understand their concerns and

         b) to make it clear that being rude when you are disappointed is ok when you are two years old, but it's not ok in the workplace, and offer an alternative behaviour path

5. Reflect on the employee's response and all of the above and decide on the consequences, if any. 

 

If a person is unable to regulate their emotional response it does raise the question of whether you want them in the team.  If it is only one minor incident, under pressure, then it's almost certainly not a warning of future problems.  Multiple incidents with trivial causes are a different matter.
