CIO is the abbreviation of Chief Information Officer (IT head of an organization). The position CTO (Chief Technology Officer) is the other name used for IT head..

As many have already answered the CIO is the Chief Infromtaion Officer, however this role is not exclusively IT.  While IT is part of the information role it is not the only part.  The IT head would fall under the direction of the CIO and in small organizations the CIO may also be the CTO or the IT Director.  The CIO is in charge of all information of the company including the IT.  Also the BPM would fall under the CIO. For this reason CIOs should know the business side of running a business and the best CIOs will have a background in business as well as IT.

There is no other name for a CIO other than CIO.  As already stated many small companies have their executives fulfill many roles and the CIO may fill the role of CTO, BPM or IT Director, but these positions are all separate positions and would be separated out in an enterprise level company.
