It is very important in fact because reading a piece of literature in its original language enables a reader to grasp the varying nuances of that language. A language is far from being a rigid construct. It is flexible and adaptive to different contexts and situations.

A particular word or sentence being read in its original language conveys much more feeling and succint meaning than the translated versions. It definitely gives you a better and in-depth feeling and experience while reading the book. The original has a far better ability to make your mind travel with the flow of the words as you read them.

It is obviously truer to the source. Some words in some languages do not give the exact same meaning the writer probably intended. In that sense, it can be considered richer.

Personally, I like reading and listening to books in their original language to practice the language. It would however depend on the book. Technical literature, in my opinion, should be read in the original language as translations are often lacking technical accuracy. I like reading fiction to relax and Norwegian is my preferred language for that. I'd only read fiction in English if its Tolkien or JKRolling. Overall, I'd say I pick the language that suits me at the time with English being my least favourite. Hope this helps Anna
