Importing CAD file is like creating underlay layer for your view to act as a reference during your modeling in Revit. CAD files have to be moved in accordance with Revit files and removing them will break the link.

Pros:

- CAD files will not increase the size of your Revit file as it's an external reference.

- All Modifications in CAD files will be updated in Revit files

Cons: You can only show/hide layers from CAD file but you can't edit in the shapes in the CAD file.

Inserting CAD file is like embedding the whole CAD file with all shapes in the Revit model. CAD files can be removed without affecting Revit files.

Pros: You have full accessibility for the CAD file shapes and you can use them in your drafting and details views.

Cons: Increase Revit file as all the CAD file will be  merged with the Revit file.

- No more cross-link between CAD files and Revit files as all modifications in CAD files will not be reflected on Revit files.

Linked CAD file can reload / update with latest changes which is done in auto cad file.

Inserted CAD cant reload / update with latest updation. Its act as a binded block file. You can delete and add another link or insert.
