Based on Maslow hierarchy of needs,  or "a Theory of Human Motivation" after a while when an employee salary reaches very high money loses its value and you start looking for importance , challenges , scope to lead the company etc. This is at the highest end. At the lower end salary apart how employees are treated, what kind of new training is imparted, what is the company culture, how people are promoted to responsible positions etc matter more, that is explained according to Herzberg's theory about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and its relation with job satisfaction. So If you lead a team or a company just pay attention to employee aspirations and try to satisfy their growth and development needs to sustain self esteem and fulfillment  .

very true. this question was already covered I feel so. Anyway it is one of component can say an important one to motivate and retain employee, but surely cannot be the one. In addition, work environment, career growth, job nature and interests are the few I can think of in addition to the emoluments for retaining the competent employee. Thanks.

a competitive advantage would be a professional allowance, travel allowances, travel tickets, training on job and out.

if only pay pockets are enough to retain an employee there wouldn't have any separation. to attract a competent employee money is a vital part but to retain the same employee is different this require work environment, continuous learning and growth opportunities in terms of increasing skills set and recognition from senior management. this could increase confidence and thinking that at least present time no other offer can provide better place than this.

This is my experience as an entrepreneur.
