First , I really do NOT need to retain all my employees.

  1. It will be a blessed day when SOME (specific) employees leave  ... bad/unsuitable employees
  2. Other employees are OK if they leave, but they are also OK if they stay  ...  good enough to stay if they wish
  3. The remaining employees who are key, critical, very important, a real asset, .... call them whatever you wish ... these are the employees that I want to retain !!

Done, with the above, it is a matter of REVERSE ENGINEERING !

If you know why good employees leave, you will be able to to determine what you need to keep them !To cut this answer short  and remain focused on the top from a practical viewpoint, you need to consider and think about the following

  1. Work environment  (physical, logical, virtual, logistics, facilties, ....)
  2. Relationship between the employer and the employee  (Values, treatment, recognition, ...)
  3. Supporting your employees (effective management policies and practices)
  4. Growing your employees (career path/training path/job advancement)
  5. Employee Compensation (salary, benefits, awards, services, ...)

I hope this answers your question

My opinion is that if your employees respect u , u can fit to an very useful work . First , u have to know very good about each person , and if u listen to their expectations must take sometimes decisions in order to make good relation with each one . The tasks must arrived to them friendly and must give them good explanation for them to understsnd your requests .

I agree with Mohamed Thiab's answer, and I would like  to add  equality and to be fair with all  employee within the performance appraisal polices and rules and this is one of best and vital factor to retain your employees.

The key to retain the employee is to motivate them, trust them and delegate the responsibly as and when required. Encourage a conductive and open work environment.

Take the responsibilities in case of (team) failure, but share/give the credit in case of achievements. This will increase the trust among the teams and accept your leadership without much issues. The team will purview you as a strong leader and help them to go extra mile .
