In other words there are plenty of managers with no people management skills? Seems that my skills would be in great use in the Middle East :)

Bad management can be found in many other countries, not just in the Middle East (ME).
There are different social groups and each have different views and approaches to business.
Let's look at this issue more closely at understanding business and social culture in the ME.
In the ME, religion plays a large role - it could be useful to understand the basics of Islam and to learn a few Arabic words.
It won't be wasted and will be appreciated.
You may need to socialise more with ME businessmen, discuss ideas and generally get more of a feel from where they are coming from, how they like to do business.
Do you really know who you are dealing with? In ME there is this concept of 'saving face' - notice that many businessmen will often speak in vague terms, generalizations, storytelling, during discussions - it is not to frustrate you but rather a way of allowing for communicating of ideas without anyone losing face at meetings.
Are you paying close attention to body language? In ME generally prefer to do business with people they know and like.
It can be helpful to communicate easily and with interest., Does everyone know what they need to doing, is everyone clear about expectations and the end result? Keep information clear and concise.
Are there regular updates to deal with troubleshooting issues and good news? It's amazing how much confusion can be caused by simple misunderstandings.
Realize that it is who you know that can make or break deals.
Find out more information about the companies.
Can you find out their track record? Have you got legal support in place? Know who are the real decision makers.
One of the main challenges is the length of time the decision-making process can take - maybe longer than you are used to.
The challenge to you then is to be adaptable and organize your business to accommodate changes.
Just as in another other part of the world, businessmen can drive hard bargains.
Plan and prepare, aim to get want you need from the deal too but remain courteous.
It can be easy to disrespect decision-makers/businessmen when it is felt they are being too demanding and requesting too many concessions.
Be ready to dance with the deal maker keeping your goal in mind.

i agree with you .

as Arabic native and based on my experience in different country's in meddle est the problem came form top management and owners since the comity of Arab businessmen many of them have money either form inheriting or they have money  but uneducated ? if the business started wrong it will reaming wrong since the owners hair the wrong management  and her is the problem !!!   if you apply for a job and you have experience more then the interviewer what will be the dissension how he will know if you are the right person for the job ? and add to that the are no bored or criteria to follow in giving the right job for the right person and add to that discrimination plays big i this matter  since Arab most of time they haired  their own peppole spicily in gulf GCC how ever the hiring system is not standing on equalization its standing on how you know and how to get the job>> also the government should involve in the control system and have to creates low not to hire unqualified spicily in management level  ,

Dear Mohammed, You can't blame a whole region for what happens in select few organizations.
If there is no proper management, it will clearly be visible in the statistics.
If you'd want to change the mechanism of the management in the company, it is upto the company to realize it, there is no other way than that.
If blame is the problem here, then honestly, the story is completely different and has nothing to do with the region or the companies at all.
Think what went wrong from your side, correct it and whoever blamed you is also responsible for whatever happened.
So welcome to the corporate! Thanks Nitin C.

what i would suggest is "to at-least increase on the employment opportunities world wide " what i mean by this is that let them not concentrate on one mind they should look out and see , there are a lot of managers with different skills in business each differing from another so when one is to change in managers or competition of managing , there will hence be productivity at high rates.

What I observed in my16 months here in ME, most of the managers has no mangement skills,.they also forgot the importance of continous learning, training are not being given to the person on the higher position.

Bad management happens when there is no harmony amongst the work group in attaining the mission of the organisation as there is absence of holistic vision of the organisation.

Majority of the times by the time you identify the bad management situation its too late for one to fire the management. This can be cured by injecting new pool of talent at senior or at par level to the current management as this will help increase the competition amongst the management to perform better and the new talent pool helps in setting up goals to the workforce by diverting them turning towards as a responsible and accountable worforce.
