Employee relation activity for the HR Manager is a very important function. Based on my learning, I would like to mention as follows:

1.     Present a few slides giving updates of recruitment status and a few up-coming HR events in the monthly all staff meeting. Introduce the new staff to all in the monthly staff meeting

2.     Join lunch with a different groups daily in the staff canteen.

3.     Visit each department for half an hour just to say hello at least once in a month

4.     Prepare staff list book with name and photograph of all staff and send a copy to all.  A lot of people will remember you for this book

5.     If any person is hospitalized, please try to visit him at least one after office hour. This will build your reputation greatly.

6.     Please keep your door open always, listen to the staffs and provide all possible help as necessary

It all depends on what you like to achieve? Is the meeting related to good news (company made profit for example) or bad news (sorry but we need to share our financial situation which will lead to redundancy in several departments.

So what is the best way?... the have a clear message, prepare the session, organize it in a timely matter, brief the manager(s) as they should know the msg before, discuss with them what is best moment (morning, afternoon, just after lunch etc)The activity it self? be creative with multi-media solutions.

1) Start an inter company newsletter or blog in which employees can share & contribute content.

2) At staff or team meetings, encourage employees to recognize their fellow co-workers for a job well done.

3) Create an employee of the month award.

4) Meet one-on-one with employees to talk about what they like and dislike about their job.

5) Host an all-staff or team breakfast or lunch.

6) Provide employees with extra time off as a reward.

7) Give employees a day off for their birthday.

8) Create a KPI board so employees can track how well they are doing on a daily/weekly basis.

9) Have a praise board in a public place where employees can informally thank other employees.

 Thanks for invite

There are so many programs and activities. Employees will be motivated to participate if it reflects their interests and if the current employee relations environment is appropriate.

I would make the first activities explorative to understand how employees are thinking and identify their interests (a clue to the types of programs that may be appropriate).

Focus groups are always a great participative start and also confirm the sincerity of the company. An employee survey is also good if the company is committed to act on the results.

I wouldn't implement any major ER program until I felt confident that I had identified the needs. In the interim normal social type activities can help to some extent.
