The start-up costs for starting an interior design business may vary regarding many factors like scale of business, targeted costumers, location, but i can tell you how to calculate business cost and allocate expenses, cost of services generally grouped in3 categories:

 

- cost of labor - generally variable

 direct salaries and hourly wages

customary and statutory benefits such as social security, vacations, health benefits .. etc

 

- cost of operation - generally fixed  

rent, phone, technology, electricity, furniture and other assets ( based on defined depreciation period )

 

- cost of marketing and sales 

staff support, brochures, advertising

 

you have to set up your business plan for the first year so your start up cost will be:

cost of fixed assets +( cost of operations + labor + sales&marketing for the next coming year based on your targeted business plan).

Insurance $500-$1200 : Not optional.  Protect your clients and yourself.  Costs depend on coverage and location.

LLC $300-$1000: Yes, it doesn't cost anything to be a sole proprietor, however, that leaves you personal assets vulnerable.

Website free - $2000:  You can go with a free website service, all the way to a custom site.  But start with something.

Business cards $50-200: Spread the word that you're open for business.  Don't worry too much about a custom designed logo or branding in the beginning.

Lawyer $300-$500: Hire a lawyer to review your contract.  Do not do any work without a lawyer-approved contract.  Again, protect your clients and yourself.

Business licenses free-$100: Depending on your location, you'll need various business licenses and resale permits.  These are necessary for doing business in many areas, but usually are very reasonable.

Most importantly is the answer to5 Ws. 

  1. What are you planning to sell?
  2. Where is your business going to setup?
  3. Who would be the target market?
  4. When are you going to launch?
  5. Why you chose interior design business?

Once the above-mentioned are met, they set the base for calculations for the initial expenses for the startup business.

  3. What assets are most required?
  4. What is your capital?
