Dear Zaid,

To effectively motivate sales teams, need to create a fun, goal-oriented culture that both encourages friendly competition and recognizes how reps want to be rewarded.

If you think financial incentives are the way to go, you couldn't be more wrong.

- For one, small businesses and startups don't have a ton of money throw around in the first place.

- Second, when it comes to motivating sales teams, money simply isn't everything.

There are five key things that are recommended to create a positive environment for your sales staff:

1- Provide clarity of direction. Make sure everyone knows where they are heading and are aligned.

2- Make sure they have the skills and resources to be able to achieve those goals.

3- Ensure they are disciplined around monitoring their performance regularly.

4- Know your key threats and have contingencies in place if things aren’t working.

5- Know what motivates individuals in order to get the most out of them.”

Motivation can come from many sources depending on which one you are willing to use. Since you have used the words “sales staff" I assume you have a product or service that you sell to clients. There are a few ways to motivate the sales staff:

1) Introduce a small percentage of commission on sales for the employees. It does not have to be a lot, even something between3-5%. It may sound like a lot but in the long run the energy that your sales staff will show converting the customers will be very well worth it.

2) If achieving targets is your goal, you can reward employees with free meals at work if those targets are met. Many employers have different variations for it from daily, weekly to monthly.

3) Introduce performance certification and awards for top employee of the month, the reward does not need to be very expensive. It can be a voucher for meal or some cash.

4) Show appreciation where it is due, a kind word or two can really make someone's day and result in a spike in motivation levels.

Remember one golden rule - A happy employee is a motivated employee.
