In academic writing and in any other genres, I first gather the facts and make notes of them.  And then when I'm ready to write, I refer to those notes.  Right now, I'm writing blogs about different places in New Zealand.  What I did earlier was gather the most salient points about a certain place, took down notes of its uniqueness, so it becomes easier for me to compose my ideas.
