Hello and greetings,

Thank you for your kind request, and I am delighted to share my thoughts on this.

On my first day in class as a teacher of English_ and I had long thought and prepared for that moment ever since I was an adolescent_ I already felt on track and ready armed with the experience of my teachers themselves as I was always monitoring and observing every word, action, response, or reaction, from them each time adding to my mental list of Do's and Don't's as teacher. As a teacher you need a rich content, and indeed I felt a sense of sufficiency.

As a matter of fact, I received my elementary education at a private bilingual school and later at a public secondary school. At both schools, the curriculum taught was the official Lebanese curriculum in contrast to other schools with private, American, French, British, German and IB curricula. My advantage as a teacher of English came from being well grounded in Arabic and English, enabling me to identify with the learning needs of each of my students as I had started from scratch in English as a child until I gained proficiency at the university level with a TOEFL score of637 and TOEIC score of960. Moreover, the Lebanese curriculum

provides a comprehensive overview and coverage of sciences, social studies and languages. Its rich blend of themes, competences and objectives allows unparalleled awareness of the core curriculum requirements as compared to other curricula implemented in Lebanon and worldwide. In terms of methodologies, I was lucky to witness the transition between the traditional approach to teaching into effective and cooperative learning.

Fortunately, public school teachers in Lebanon receive continuous professional development from the National Center for Research and Development. We were extremely excited with the new curriculum first implemented in2001 as it was student-based, project-based, hands-on and relevant to our daily life experience. It was localized and designed to meet the needs of an average Lebanese in terms of language, science, technology and other domains.

Hence, I retained all my learning experiences and after completing my undergraduate studies, I felt totally prepared to run a class. My students felt the vibes too and were always motivated to work and participate, each at his/her own pace. Knowing that learning is a continuous and never-ending process, I was always determined to learn a little bit about everything and from everybody without exceptions. My mother, grandmother, family members, the neighbors, the local grocer, my colleagues and my students. At times I had to learn in order to adapt or cope and at other times I learned it the hard way, especially in terms of classroom management and discipline.

Professional development, specialist courses, such as my accounting class nowadays, improvement plans, and real life experience, particularly in translation over the last year, all yield in as insights, inform my teaching experience and enrich my first and ever-loved career of teaching. Today, I am a student, of life, MA program, and other colleagues, and I am a teacher of students, other colleagues and random people in the neighborhood, social gatherings and even Toastmasters club meeting. I am also a hard worker as a teacher, tutor, interpreter, translator and above all as a lover of knowledge and education.

Of course, nothing is perfect and my education was imperfect too, we missed the focus on individual needs, respect of people with special needs, plurality, diversity, tolerance, questioning absolute truths, interpersonal skills, scientific curiosity and many other needs of our human society that are pressing needs of any learner in order to embrace knowledge and evolve as a learner. I try to cover up the shortcomings through continued education, travelling, hiking, visiting museums, meeting new people of different cultures, and most importantly reading.

In conclusion, I can modestly yet firmly assure that I was extremely lucky to receive public education in Lebanon and that was the key for me to start a career in linguistics and education and to broaden the scope of this career especially when I was lucky to join an international school in Abu Dhabi and when I was able to extend my expertise to include translation, transcreation, localization, proofreading, copy-editing in addition to education.

Indeed, the points of improvement regarding my education and the whole education systems are many, and many others were not lucky enough to benefit from curriculum. I perhaps lacked requirements of the best practices in the domain of linguistics and education, but the dreams are big, work is under process, and I am keen on pursuing continuous self-development and maximization of skills and competencies.

Dear Aya Ahmed,

I have studied different teaching techniques when I was in my Pre-Masters year in Applied linguistics which helped me a lot in my career. Moreover, I studied Assessment and Second Language Acquisition which were also very useful in my career.
