In short, a businessman is any person that engages in a series of economic activities to earn a profit. An entrepreneur, on the other hand, is someone who conceives an idea or a solution to a current problem that the society is facing, finds investors and sets up an enterprise to offer his expertise to the general public.

A businessman is "programmed" and will have a more predictable and conservative approach, generally. An entrepreneur will be more "spontaneous" and go with more "gut feelings" than conventional actions and is more likely to incorporate a greater risk element into his dealings.

While I like the comparisons made between an "entrepreneur" and a "businessman", I think the two terms can legitimately be used interchangeably, in some cases. Being a former entrepreneur myself, the only major differences I can think of are:

  1. You can be an entrepreneur from day one, before becoming a businessman and before cashing in on your "creation", by already starting something from the scratch.
  2. An entrepreneur can also be a social entrepreneur or a non-profit entrepreneur not associated with the conventional notion of profit-making business.
  3. An entrepreneur is often someone who starts up own business based on own idea, from the scratch. It is often associated with a new invention, a new idea or a new innovation. A businessman can become one by following on the steps of others (entrepreneurs).
  4. An entrepreneur is often more courageous and non-conventional in risk taking and in being creative, while treating a business as its own creation (child). A businessman can be less attached to business (a business doctor who helps companies become healthy before selling them is a business man, not an entrepreneur)
  5. Not every businessman is entrepreneurial and not every entrepreneurial spirit is business-oriented.
