What is difference between Gate valve & Butterfly valve?

The purpose and use of both gate and butterfly valves are same. 

 

The difference between the both valves lies in shape, size and operation.

 

Butterfly valves are lighter than gate valves, so for the big sizes it is convenient to install and operate butterfly valve because it is lighter and compact in compare to gate valves.

 

 

Gate Valve: This type of valve actually functions like a gate, a simple open/close movement, with the disc perpendicular to the direction of the flow. It's available different kinds of designs like Knife, Wedge, Pipeline slab and Parallel Slides designs. We can also use it myriad of purposes. Discharge is usually complete with no residues left standing in the pipeline.

Butterfly Valve: Its designs available in the form of a disc or double or triple offset shafts that operate perpendicular to the flow direction.  Such valves can easily control flow but do leave some residual material in the pipes. From the pressure handling side the gate valves withstand bigger pressures than the butterfly So they differ for the pipeline they are used according ti the average pressure at the line Also the construction of each is different and is related with the max. Pressure to withstand

1- gate valve used for complete closed or open , but butterfly valve used for partial open and closed

 

2- gate valve used for maintains purpose but butterfly valve can used for controlling fluid or  regulating the flow
