What are the differences between IP camera and CCTV camera?

An IP camera uses an Ethernet cable and transmits a digital signal. This type of camera can be easily networked and can send a signal to a network video recorder (NVR) located on a local or remote network.

CCTV is used to refer to video surveillance and video security cameras in general, it actually refers to analog security cameras which transmit an analog TV signal. This type of camera uses coax cable and requires a BNC connection in order to be connected to a DVR for recording or a monitor for viewing images.

Each type of camera type has its own pros and cons, but in the main video surveillance is moving over to IP cameras, particularly for business use. As their cost comes down, they are becoming more popular for home use.

Below are the difference 

1 - CCTV camera is basically Analog Camera and IP is a digital camera

2 - Analog camera connects over RJ Cable and does not need any network whereas IP Camera needs to have network and connects using CAT6 Cable

3 - Analog camera cannot be accessed directly by mobile applications, IP Camera can be access from any where using the IP Address without any DVR/NVR

4 - IP Cameras give better video then CCTV Camera

5 - IP Camera video can be recorded on a PC/Workstation directly with small software. Analog cameras need hardware (PCI Cards) for recording on the PC/Workstation

CCTV Camera can be an IP or an Analog camera. The difference of the two is that, IP Camera is configured by assigning IP address on the NVR or on the camera itself. It is powered or connected over POE (Power Over Ethernet) Switch. IP Camera or its system can be connected to the existing Local Area Network and can be monitored and controlled on desktop and mobile devices (using its downloadable app), WAN and LAN. While the Analog camera, it is connected over Non-POE switch and powered by a power supply. IP Address can be assigned on its DVR so that it can be monitored and controlled over LAN and WAN using desktop and mobile devices.

IP Camera

2. Higher resolution. They can achieve up to 1980 x 1080 or even higher
3. They make adding of cameras easy
4. Higher security. If you go on wireless
5. Cost and Band width are higher
6. IP camera use CMOS lens

CCTV Camera

• Lower resolution compared with IP camera
• They are generally cheaper and easy to install
• Stable and reliable
• They are used in analogue system
• analogue camera use CCD lens

CCTV are analog cameras while IP are network cameras. IP cameras being fully digital support higher image quality currently upto 4K in mainstream cameras. Think of CCTV like your old TV cable from the cable company while IP cameras are like Netflix.

IP Camera is IP based camera, and you need a browser to open while CCTV analog camera is DVR and no need IP to identify the camera.

Analogue CCTV system ---- They work on their own system. Every cable from the CCTV camera would have to go to DVR and from the DVR, then you can add into your LAN.

There are both pros and cons using these system. Depending on your needs and requirements.

IP PROs:Higher resolution. They can achieve up to x or even higher.They make adding of cameras easy. If you are running a building with many cameras. You will appreciate thatHigher security. If you go on wireless.. they have encryption like WPA/WPA2 which make it a bit harder to hack.

IP CONs:Higher cost. Each IP cameras will cost higher than standard CCTV cameras. High bandwidth. You need a fast LAN if you are installing many due to their streaming. You need to have a good reliable IP cameras.Generally I feel you need above average IT knowledge to know what is going on and troubleshoot in case you having problem.

CCTV PROs:Stable and reliable. This technology has been around for years...Cost effective. They are generally cheaper and easy to install.Easy install. You do not need superb IT knowledge to install this. Just plug and play.

CCTV CONs: Resolution stay max cap at x (D1). Anything higher will be a different system like SDI etc. But they are even more expensive than IP cameras.Tons of cable. If you are running ach orch, you are like having cables running back to DVRs. It is also more tedious if you need to add cameras last minutes as you need to run the cables from cameras back to DVR again.

IP Camera's is working in LAN netwok its connected in switch.Its open to the computer in search ip address.Its stores in the NVR devices. CCTV camera's is not connected in LAN its connected in DVR'S its also storage device.
