IMO, hypermarket  are large self-service grocery stores with  variety of foods and household items .  Hypermarkets are large retail establishments ,  a combination of supermarket and department stores.   Supermarkets are also  grocery stores that also provide household items. However, supermarkets are smaller than hypermarkets.

Key Difference: Supermarkets are large self-service grocery stores that offer customers a variety of foods and household supplies. The merchandise is organized into an organized aisle format, where each aisle is numbered or labeled and has only similar goods placed together. Hypermarkets are large retail establishments that are a combination of supermarket and department stores. They are considered as a one-stop shop for all of the customer’s needs. Hypermarkets basically have all the merchandise that could be required by a person on a daily basis.

A hypermarket (hyper) is a superstore that stocks and sells a large number of FMCG, in bulk. A hyper store’s layout is more of a warehouse than a store. A hyper tends to have the appearance of being impersonal and somewhat cold. A hypers’ stock is sold at a cheaper price than a supermarket, however more stock needs to be sold to make a profit. Hypers position themselves on a no frills approach, limiting costs on extras. For example a hyper will not necessarily unpack products from boxes before putting it on the shelf but leave the product in an open box. Also, a hyper will save expenditure on in store servicescape, thus a store may not be tiled or have beautiful lights draped from the ceiling etc. An example of a hypermarket would be a Shoprite or U-Save. The low-priced, no frills approach to shopping are hypermarkets’ competitive advantage.

A supermarket, or commonly known as a grocery store, has a competitive advantage over a hypermarket in terms of product variety. The supermarket store decour would also be more attractive and the staff are likely to be more helpful. Lastly, a supermarket’s main competitave advantage will occur over the Christmas season, when the store is transformed into a wonderland of adventure and excitement, whereas a hypermarket (even if it tries to engage in the Christmas cheer), will remain a glorified meat locker.

A hypermarket is a superstore combining a supermarket and a department store. The result is an expansive retail facility carrying a wide range of products under one roof, including full groceries lines and general merchandise. In theory, hypermarkets allow customers to satisfy all their routine shopping needs in one trip.

A supermarket, a large form of the traditional grocery store, is a self service shop offering a wide variety of food and household products, organized into aisles. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box market.

Supermarkets and hypermarkets are two different types of shopping stores that are quite similar in nature. There is only a fine line that differentiates between the two, which can often become confusing for many people. Many hypermarkets are often mistaken for supermarkets and vice-versa. Supermarkets are grocery stores that also provide household items, while hypermarkets are a combination of grocery stores, department stores and discount stores.
