What is the difference between sales and business development? Is it recommended to include responsibility of both in a single role?

I would not recommend merging the two roles into one as business development has a big role of identifying scope of improvements in all functional areas of the business entity for over all business development.

Sales in itself is a specialized field with very focused approach having prime responsibility of customers engagement to generate revenue and profit.
