Considering the increasing number of health care facilities and more access to care and the diversity of the UAE population, health literacy will be important. Research has shown that health literacy adds significant to the cost of health care (National Academy on Aging Society) .
Thank you Mohammed, I think that is a great idea. It is my understanding that several "strategic plans" are out there, although I am not clear on them. What I do not see is "evidence based plans" and my concern is that the UAE is so diverse, and unique in its population setting that you cannot simply take what worked in other countries and transplant it to the UAE So who buys into the idea of improving the public health system through a strategic plan that includes health literacy as a must? I do not represent any government or non-government authority in the UAE, strictly my own research but would like to hear more about what you suggest. I am currently assisting in the set up of home health care training to include nutrition counseling training for health professionals. There are several behavioral determinants of disease that are easily corrected if the right mind set is there. Nutrition behavior can be corrected but to change the mindset we have to train people on what they are putting in their mouth, the content of it, to the food label, the interaction with possible prescriptions they may be consuming, and the chronic disease outcomes if not corrected.
May I suggest that you (presumably representing UAE heath authorites or at least having a connection to them) will need to propose a holistic and comprehensive approah to the heath situation now and in the future in UAE.
In this regard, may I ppropose that UAE needs to adopt a25 years National Health strategic program that comprises5 strategic plans,5 years each, ... with clear and well-defiined entry and exit points for each5-years strategic plan, its entry point and its exit ... leading all the way through to common shared and accepted Nathional health vision !!if you need to work on this in more detail, let me know !
