one of the major benefits of using flat design is that it makes any user interface look clean and enjoyable to look at ( it dosen't hurt your eyes) so one of the advantages that using flat design elements has is that you will not have to spend lots of time working on making your elements fit togather in a nice enjoyable design. it saves time and make complex user interface cleaner and less scary to the user.
Personally I support the flat design & benefit of it all way around. Since website is not to perticular device specific, it extended to mobile, tab & other device so flat design comes handy for rendering your website on multiple device. It is more user friendly & make your user experience much better then skeuomorphic design.

Microsoft metro UI (now modern UI) is great example of flat design that was introduced with windows8 & other device like mobile & tab.
