If my customer was a family member, maybe I'd tell them to buy what I sell, just at under one condition; if I trust that the goods are of good quality and at a good competitive price.

Any customer oriented company will like to treat its customers as valued there own relations. Your market begins from your living place. 

Depends on the needs and specifications they require, just like you should advise any customer and understand their needs before selling a product or service to them the same should be done for family. There is however conflict of interest here because you would want the best for a family member whereas a regular customer is a complete stranger to you therefore you only carry out your job role as required.
