When you are a marketing executive each day is a learning experience. At that time I was working for Standard Chartered bank in1998. My manger was MrSubhankar  Sengupta a fresh MBA and  MrViral Rupani who was from a business family and knew in and out of the Calcutta business district . And big boss was Mr Pralay Mandal. I do not know where they are now. My sales target was not met for the week. I was upset.

I was put before the three people and I felt as if I was before a firing squad. I was told to work harder and told to scan the central business district. As usual I went for an appointment and I was  told to meet  a man  at his work shop  the next day. At that time our bank was providing cash pick up and delivery which was a big hit as business people could safely get cash when they wanted.

The next day I was a man who looked like he has just landed from a village. I was disappointed. He did not look impressive. Near him stood a bike with gunny bags slung on both sides. He introduced himself  to  be the father of the person whom I had met earlier. Incidentally his son looked more impressive with western attire.

He told me you young people tell lies. In these bags I have5 lakhs cash. I deal with cash . Now I am taking a big risk. If what you have told my son is true I will verify that with the branch manager and the deal  is done. And I will give the reference of all my friends. But if your promise is false never dare to set foot in my office again.

I was feeling nervous sitting in the back seat with5 lakh rupees which was a lot of money in1998.

But the branch manager at that time Mr Jude Gomes was a diplomatic person and won’t let  go5 lakhs in the lean season. The deal was done and my job was secure for the month.

Next month would take care of itself as festive season meant more business.
