Does it improve resource sharing ? Yes, you pay for what you use. Deduplication technology improves sharing as well.

Big Corporates implement cloud in several ways

1.Private Cloud Implementation with a Virtualization Platform such as Xen, VMWare, MS HyperV, KVM

2. Public Cloud, leverage public platforms such as Amazon, Azure, Rackspace

3. Hybrid Cloud, Eg:- Use a Private Cloud but backup data in the Cloud (like Amazon Glacier).

The easiest way to think about cloud computing is as doing business on the Web, therefore eliminating the need for in-house technology infrastructure servers and software to purchase, run and maintain. Unlike traditional software, which is distributed and deployed on-premise, cloud applications are designed for Web deployment. They are multi tenant (delivered by one vendor to many customers), and users share processing power and space that is managed by the vendor.

Benefits to switching to a cloud environment:

  1. Quick implementation process.

  2. Anytime access from anywhere with an Internet connection

  3. Lower upfront costs

  4. Little or no hardware or maintenance costs

  5. Reduced support costs

  6. Reallocation of resources

  7. Easier and more regular upgrades

  8. Disaster recovery and backup capabilities

"Cloud computing" is a new marketing name for a relatively old (at least not so very new) technology, against existing perceptions. It is the same as "distributed computing" which basically means the ability to operate a program or an application on many connected computers at the same time, allowing simultaneous access. This can be done within a local network (house, small office or big company). Cloud computing refers to offering such connectivity to a bigger network; the world wide web. All you need to gain access, is acces to the www.

Example:

The "new cloud computing" for Microsoft means transforming their leading email program Outlook (formerly Outlook Express) from a stand-alone-software (installable on single PC's or on a server-based network connecting multiple PC's) to a "cloud-ased" program, simply meaning, the web (not only the local internet), thereby replacing their old program (brand) hotmail.com.

Cloud Computing as a new term mainly refers to the avancement of the so-called SaaS (Software as a Service), which also has been around for quite a while now, offering subscription-based software services  to customers while taaking care of all the IT maintenance activities from a single (or multiple) server locations.

E-mail marketing services such as; ConstantContact & Vertical Response is also a form of cloud computing. As a matter of fact, any online softwate or even a website with application functionalities can qualify to gain membership of the "cloud computing club." New name, not so very new technology. :-)

Cloud computing hold great promises for retail enabling retailers to capture and analyze customer data and to make highly relevant offers in real time. Cloud computing lets you capture and deliver customer data to and from every touch point at the moment you need it.

resource sharing ?

If you have a server with full speed , look like I have a processor from Mars materials , I think some day Intel and AMD will Do , If they are not doing that now behind the seen !

Consider that you have threading and Virtulization and a lot of cores for a processors that you can't count ( all in One and one for all)

Consider that you have a storage with z end Bytes  ( zita byte from a famous movie )

It totally depends on situation, case to case basis and depending on companies security and data governance strategy.

Most of the cases companies tries to reduce their CAPEX and like to run their business in OPEX mode.

Prior to adopting any Cloud strategy it's important to understand ROI in each of the strategy path and according we need adopt right Cloud Strategy for the organization.

Definitely we can improve resource sharing like CPU, Memory and Disk Space by adopting any virtulization technology.

I have earlier worked as an Enterprise Architect to plan Cloud Strategy adoption of a $4 billion US company.
