From my point of veiw , i think the first lead to the second as no one work hard and can't achive the required result , unless he / she have been miss leaded from their managers , However i think if you work hard but in the accurate directions then for sure you will a Unique in your place and not a routine work.

The end justifies the means (In this case the effort), A very true statement in terms of business accomplishments. Definitely I'd prefer my team to achieve the desired business goals and objectives and accomplish their mission with a job well done, sealed and delivered. The perfect end.

However I'm one who would not ignore the effort behind the job. In case of Failure to achieve the objectives and mission I will try to analyze and evaluate the efforts of my personnel and conduct a detailed analysis of their performance.

If there are errors made by the team in achieving the goals then definitely it will be very unimpressive. However nothing is written in stone and sometimes despite one's best efforts the result may end up being failure.

After a detailed investigation I'd formulate a conclusion based on my findings what course of action is to be taken. We might need to formulate another strategy or modify the current one by changing our approach or through improvement of the current one.

An Example: I've whitnessed situations where a sales person made their best effort to secure a good order from a top client, However AFTER quoting prices and confirming availability of the required materials the department refused to fullfill the order claiming they had a shortage of the materials and could not supply them on time. All the blame was dumped on the sales person for ruining relations with that client, by the management and issued warning of termination to him. This is an ideal example of extremely poor management who fail to analyze where the critical error was made and laying blame on the wrong person.

Well, this is a good question.

From my experience, what companies care about is the job being done not the effort placed in order to do it.

If i am an employer, then i will take the other approach. which is to highlight the effort placed in doing the job but not neglecting the result as well. by doing so, i can strengthen the team's dynamic and build a motivated team.

This question is connected I think with the qualifications of a good manager. If you have a good manager then you have a good team and usually good teams are winning the game. Sometimes of course, lose but then it is for a specific reason that a good manager can figure out. Most of the times well organised teams with the proper leadership, can come up with very good results. The vision, the target, the seting-up, the hard work always give a job well done.

So, you’re basically asking whether I’m a result-orientated or a process-orientated (effort) evaluator.

I am definitely a process evaluator with end-results in mind. Successful end-results can be booked by coincidence or luck or can be a one-time hit! But a successful process (read; employee effort), tailored around achieving positive end-results effectively & efficiently,  is MORE likely to yield consistent & increasing success.

Measuring performance through final-results is well-known way. Yet, steady successful business (or personal) growth is usually measured & enhanced through process monitoring & not (solely) through a tabular comparison of mid-way results with pre-defined final goals.

Efforts definately matters, yet getting the job done in time is more important as an employer. As efforts cannot help the company to achieve its objectves, yet completing tasks on time or a head of time does, and improves the company image as well.and as they say "work smart, not hard".

DEAR MADAM,

IAM SORRY TO SAY THE WORD STUFF MUST BE STAFF IF IAM NOT WRONG.

I WILL SURELY APPRECIATE THE EFFORT OF MY STAFF PROVIDED THEY HAVE ABLE TO FETCH THE EXPECTED RESULT. OTHERWISE  I WILL ASK THEM TO TRY AGAIN BUT WILL NOT GET ANGRY ON THEM AND WILL CERTAINLY ENCORAGE THEM .  AS FAILURE IS THE PILLAR OF SUCCESS.

An employer will always look at the end results ... they would not care if so much effort was put into a particular task by an employee ,,, they still expect end results to be met.   A failed task will mean a loss in profits ....  that is why they hire good and professional managers to ensure that an objective is always met with an acceptable results .....
