Always learn the magic of developing a want as to why the visitor should come back or stay, even when the visitor is not really supposed to be there.
Something free is always eye catchy, this way they can try the service and you almost have a client in hand, almost..now after the free period is over, the client can decide whether to stay or not.
Make sure you give out a list of reasons as to why the client should stay, show testimonials of other clients, benefits associated, extras on staying etc.

The attractiveness of the website content should be in a simple structure that does not make headache to the visitor.
Testimonies works pretty well about certain services or products listed on your website, Also it is important to explain to the visitor why he should be a current client, what are the benefits before and after.

As everyone said before the website has to be attractive. Making your website as a safe environment and focusing on the goal of the website. Your website should be easy to use and clear. You can track what attracts the visitors to your website by doing a survey or using a tracking system and then you can send them a newsfeed or offers if u're website is selling something. For example, you can make a special offer to them like if they registered to your website they will have a trial period for free or take a5% discount on buying something. These things attract the people most, that's in my opinion.
