I believe that can be best answered by HR specialists - specially the people responsible for talent management.
However, as an employee, I can say that what works for me is:1.
Appreciation - Unless your team members / supervisors appreciate what you do, you're not really going to feel that what you do is useful or contributes to the organization2.
Recognition & Rewards - One of the basic necessities, IMO.
If you don't get recognized and rewarded for your achievements, its kind of pointless being a performer.3.
Care - Your organization should care for you.
Flexi-timings if the nature of the job tolerates it, good healthcare, leave structure, etc.
So that you can perform in a worry free manner.4.
Bonding with your team members - Things like being taken out for a team only event like a movie, lunch, to a recreational resort helps team members bond with their supervisors and helps in boosting motivation.5.
Management support - Often, the nature of an assignment is such that one needs to get unpopular at times because of the decisions one makes.
Having your immediate boss / the chain of command to support you makes all the difference in boosting your motivation levels - you tend to work more happily and with more confidence / motivation if you know that your boss has your back.
Hope that helps.
As I said, I'm not an expert but am contributing based solely on my perception.
