If a project has a beginning and an end, what is its life cycle and how is it managed? To be effective and workable project methodologies should be appropriate to the task and the organisation.
For simple projects in a small organisation, agreed milestones, a few checklists and someone to steer the project are all that are required.
For complex projects in a large organisation a more structured approach is needed, to set up and approve the project, monitor and guides its progress, solve its problems, deliver the end product (or gain) and close it down.
In order to understand the methodology we need to look at the project life cycle.
The detailed life cycle will be dependent upon the size and type of organisation and the size and type of the project.
However, in outline they all have very similar elements.

Absolutely, I agree every project should have specific methodologies.
Project control begins early in the project with planning and ends with the project post-implementation review.
Each project should be assessed for the appropriate level of control needed: too much control is too time consuming, too little control is very risky ! I personally prefer CMM (Capability Maturity model) for lengthy projects.
For other simple projects you can follow simple and traditional approach.

Agree with Mohammed Awwad.
All depends on the type of project.
Project manager can select methodology on the size and type of the project.
Simple projects can be handle with few checklists but complex ones should be with structured approach like PRiSM (Projects integrating Sustainable Methods).

roject management in the modern sense began in the early1950s, driven by businesses that realised the benefits of organising work around projects, and the critical need to communicate and co-ordinate work across departments and professions.

Project management is no small task. It has a definite beginning and end, and is not a continuous process. Project management uses various tools to measure progress and track project tasks. Projects need ad-hoc resources, as opposed to businesses that have dedicated full-time positions.

Project management methodologies consist of four to five process groups, and a control system. Regardless of the methodology or terminology used, project management uses the same basic processes. Process groups typically include:

  1. Initiation
  2. Planning and Design
  3. Execution
  4. Monitoring and Controlling
  5. Closing
