The decision to choose from public or private cloud depends on the multiple factors ranging  from regulatory requirements of the industry the company is in to the size and type of technology investment the company has already made in its current IT infrastructure.

Companies with more recent and cloud ready infrastructure can build a private cloud with less effort and lower TCO while companies with outdated or non-cloud ready infrastructure can opt for a public cloud. But it is essential for some businesses to first go through their regulatory requirements to avoid a wasted investment.  Internal policies regarding the confidentiality of the data are also something to look for before going to a public cloud, a hybrid or private cloud is a better option if the company is not allowed to host the data anywhere other than its own infrastructure.

The company should first collect all data that can help them to make a decision (regulatory requirements, capability of current infrastructure, outcomes required, budgets, human resources available etc), analyze it carefully and then make a decision to opt for any of the two decisions. It is important to keep in mind that cloud is not the answer to all IT related problems.

Right now regulatory requirements are of the biggest concern. The next is security and privacy concerns, this may not be a  considerable concern for the SME market, however for large companies this is a massive concern and thus they may go for a private cloud. One should also realize a large company is willing to spend more on a private cloud which will give them the other cloud beased benefits whilst negating a few of the privacy concerns. The private or public cloud question basically is a control vs cost question, private cloud higher control higher cost, private lower control, lower cost. For organizations to widely start adopting cloud, there needs to be proper global regulatory bodies in place to manage the security and privacy aspects of it. And another concern is if it's worth the effort to make the existing systems cloud optimised if it isn't to be able to utilize the full power of cloud computing.

Have only one question with regard to your viewpoint.

Why do you think outdated or non-cloud ready infrastructure can opt for a public cloud?

My viewpoint: It may take more time. I think in that case Application Portfolio Rationalisation followed by decommission can help.

Please share your thought on this.

Best Regards
