Actually to lead the market you need to be unique or pioneer, but it does not necessarily mean that you must have an Active strategy, sometimes a Re-active strategy works better than an active one. 

When your rivals take a strategy actively but it takes them to a wrong place, you should avoid it and this avoidance is a reactive strategy, and it is right to take it. 

Active strategy of not approaching to smart phones and new generations of Oss by Nokia, led them to a fiasco, because they thought they were unique, they lost the market share, the brand and everything. 

 

Sometimes surfing on the waves is better than drowning!!
