I suggest that to be an EFFECTIVE manager you need to

  • Understand the company's strategy,
  • Plan (with your staff) your tactics to achieve the company's agreed goals,
  • Plan (with your staff) the performance indicators you will use to monitor the progress of the agreed tactics, and
  • Execute (with your staff) the approved plans and take corrective actions as & when required.

Effective managers should be creative thinkers and great coaches. They should understand the pulse of his reportees and devise methods to drive them to reach targets. Identify, appreciate and delegate the right people. Help maintain integrity across the operations. 

Effective managers in my opinion should be three dimensional MQ= IQ+EQ+PQ these are the combination of skills which managers need to make things happen with and through other people, one way or the other managers are supporting other people agendas, where;

IQ skills: dealing with problems, tasks and money (Sees the desired outcome for self and

                 others, achieve result, strategic thinking, make decision and solve problems)

EQ skills: dealing with people (motivating, influencing, coaching, delegating and

                  managing self)

PQ skills: making things happen (acquiring power, using power, power integrity,

                  managing change and taking control.

Manager should have the confidence to lead from the front, able to delegate work, a problem solver, should motivate and involve staff in doing all activities.
