The answer is very simple and the same time hard because in our days only one thing is important.

The difference is between profit and loss.

The difference between success and failure is measured by how much patience and persistence you are as a project manager or General Manger. The only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is that they remain patient with disregard to their slow progress and continue to be persistent even if they can't see any results. Haven't anyone faced that situation in real life??The difference maybe as thin as the pin of the needle sometimes." If i just waited one more minute i could have succeeded." !!!

Basic3 P's :

- Patience (sometimes things just need time to come to their right place, of course with zillions of obstacles in the way)

- Perseverance (hurdling through project obstacle course requires strong will and dedication)

- Profit (and last but not least, unfortunately---> ''money makes the world go around'')

To be successful, you need to get the job done on time, within budget and according to the desired quality standards. So, “Success” means promotion or on the way to be promoted and on the road to a rewarding career.

Failure occurs when you failed to get the job done whatever may be the reasons behind it. So, “Failure” means you are fired or demoted or at the most, placed in a position from where you would leave the company soon at your own choice.. Nevertheless, ”Failure is the pillar of success”. You learn by mistake. So, try re-branding yourself with hard work and sincerity – certainly, you will be successful in your next endeavor.

Ask yourself these questions... are you a total failure? Or is it just your performance/skills that make you fail? These questions allow you to view the issue in a better perspective. If it's my performance/skill that lets me down, how can I improve upon it?

See the difference? If you can calm yourself down and view your issue positively, you will be able to deal with it more objectively and productively. You will treat the failure as a learning opportunity to improve yourself.

In general a common perspective for project success or failure is linked with profit and loss. However, a close linked for project success is linked with achieving the business case, " the purpose to achieve for which project was initiated". This is why PM must be associated with project before or at the time of Project Charter. Some experts linked success with cost, quality and time triangle as well, but still these parameters are set at high level.

There are many different forms of success; for some it will be completing the project on time, for others its completing under budget. It can be the successful transition (flow) from one project to the next or even having a positive meeting with stakeholders/investors. Personal Success is the real measurement - setting your own goals and staying motivated till the end of the project. (Of course the opposite can be said for the failure of a project) But lets stick to the successful side of things)

If your project is completed within expected time and cost with desired quality (low defect)  then its a success otherwise failure.

Could not agree more with Mr. Panicos since many factors link the project outcomes with P&L of a business.

From an individual perspective, the following could help one become a better PM, that means a successful PM:

1. Decrease goldplating and increase transparency in leading as a project lead.2. Increase the ability to take corrective actions.3. Proactively creating contingencies.

4. Bettering project risk management on every project.5. Unlearning quickly as part of project closure.

6.Setting up the communication management plan quickly to roll things out, during the start of the project.

From a project perspective:

1. Achieving the milestones or deliverables efficiently.2. Maintaining a good EV.3. Maintaining critical matrices consistently.

4.Timing the ramp up and cost cut downs.

can be indicators for successful project execution.
