Yes, certainly. One must conduct the exit interviews in order to have a clear understanding of why the employee is leaving and what factors can be improved for future retention. Questions to be asked can be:

1. Which factors attracted you to join our Company?

2. What did you like the most and least about your Job?

3. What are the top three most influential factors for leaving the Company?

4. Would you recommend this company or department to a friend as a place to work?

5.  Rate your experience of the following while employed at our company

i. Attitudes of colleagues

ii. Discrimination

iii. Cooperation from top Management

iv. Formal Training & development programs

v. Supervision

vi. Harassment of any nature

vii. Availability of updated formal J.D

What are the reasons behind your resignations?

If the reasons are the company culture, environment or issues related to work I should ask more questions and investigate the whole issue, even if the employee insisted on the resignations.

If he got better offer.

Can we know the company name, and what is the offer he received?

If it is for better position, I should check if we can offer him similar post?

What can we do to change your opinion and retain your services?

Yes, we do that.

First, we have to build a harmony in doing the interview.

To be honest we have already the form prepared during the interview.

But for me the most important question asked is:

1. Why did you resign from your post?

2. During your stay with the company:

a. What is the most important thing you think that benefits you?

b. Is the company Policy/Management has impacted you in your decision to leave?

c. What frustrates you most? either in your work, colleagues or superior

3. By chance, is there anything that the company can stop you from resigning.

4. Ask for the offer letter or details of the company where he/she will go.

5. Shake Hands or say best wishes to him/her.

Exit interviews are just formality because employee already set up his/her mind and he wants to get away from you as he is entering a new paradise with all his passion. If I conduct exit interview my question will be what be the positive points of the company and where do we improve more and what should we do to retain employees and how is your journey with the company.
