1. Make sure you aren't part of the problem.

2. Don't ask about the employee's personal life.

3. Be compassionate but fair.

If you know your employee is in a tough situation, you may want to be as helpful as possible.

"Taking a compassionate approach is a good thing to do, but it has to be applied evenly across the work force. Otherwise it's not fair,"

4. Use the resources you have.

If the employee needs counseling, you almost certainly have some resources provided by your medical insurance it is recommendable to call on these resources and refer the employee for services

The best way to solve employee problems is to understand their point of view and align them with organizational objectives and goals. Counsel them. Mentor them make them understand the organization culture and views. Make them understand that they may be able to influence their circle up to a certain point and beyond that accept it and move ahead. This will create a healthy environment.

Ms. Hassan.  I think its important to first understand what the problem is before you can address it.   Let that person know they are in a safe environment, and that they will not be judged with what is shared with you.

Most things you will find are easily searched for on Google; but first let them know it is a safe and judgement free zone.   Very difficult to do, but once that trust is established, you will be able to begin to help.

If its work related; there are procedures.   If it is personal in nature; then it will be a very delicate process.  The help may not be with you, but with outside assistance.

Good luck.   Kader.
