Research paper: What is the right way to document a citation in my paper?

If you're writing a literary research paper or a research paper that has to do with humanities in general, MLA style is what's best used for citation. You can check this website  for more detailed information on how to cite for any type of source, e.g books, newspapers, electronic sources, etc. But to keep it short simply this is the MLA style according to the website: 

In your citation, the elements should be listed in the following order:

1. Author.
2. Title of source.
3. Title of container.
4. Other contributors.
5. Version.
6. Number.
7. Publisher.
8. Publication date.
9. Location.

Huh. like in any paper - you name the author, open the brackets and then quite from them, close the brackets, add an upper case number, make a footnote at the page bottom and there state where the quote comes from 

author's last name, year of publication, and the page number for the reference (preceded by "p.")

if there are 2 authors, indicate the authors' names. use the conjunction "and" between the authors' names.

3-5 authors, list all the authors in a parentheses, year of publication

for an unknown author, cite the source by its title. titles of books and reports are italicized or underlined. titles of articles and chapters are in quotation marks.

In the academic environment, citation involves linking an idea within a new text to information or data derived from another source document and its author(s). This gives recognition to the original author by providing sufficient information from the publication details so that the reader can locate the original document if they wish. Integration of the ideas of others can be done:

• by direct quotation - that is, writing down what they wrote word by word
• by paraphrasing the idea in words that are different from those of the original author
• by summarizing the general ideas of the original author in less detail than in paraphrasing.

Whichever of these methods is adopted, the actual attribution in the text (the publishing details) will follow the citation and referencing style required for your writing.

You can use differnet method which suits as per your requriement. such as MS Word referencing tool free of cost which provides all types of styles, or End Note program or mendeley softwares for automatic referencing from the online data bases   

You can use Zotero which is a free and open-source reference management software 

In Spain we use mainly APA style. That means Author SURNAME, and name initial, (date), Title, (in Italics if book), City and Publishing house.

Hi, Nowadays its as simple as you can just download endnote and easily you can cite any paper within a couple of seconds. By Endnote you can also change the cite reference in any other format that is following in a minute. What will you do? Just download the library of all kinds of reference and finish.

It depends on the nature of the paper, its best to ask the professors about the citation format; e.g. One is APA it is used in psychology or business studies I have never used it though. The other more common citation format that is used is MLA (there are many editions of it and normally the latest is used like MLA 8 but it also depends on the teacher e.g. some may ask for MLA 7 or 2 etc).

MLA, especially the latest one is extremely easy to use it only ask for available information, for different sources, there are different ways to cite for example for a book; Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date. Print.

For website:

Last Name, First Name. Title of the webpage. website title. publisher, publication date. Web. Date Accessed. URL of the site (remove https:// and www)

If no information of something like authors name, or publisher or page numbers there is no need to include it.
