In my opinion:

Trade discount given when the buyer is an old customer and sales are made in bulk while Sale discount given when a seller is in immediate need of cash.

Example: Sale discount 2/10 net 30 terms, where a costumer can take a two percent discount if it pays an invoice within ten days of the invoice date.
