Maintenance Engineer is the second person called-in when equipment is not operating properly. The first person called to address problem plant and equipment is the appropriate Maintenance Technician. When the technician cannot solve the problem the maintenance engineer is called in to help resolve the issue correctly. Since the job involves solving difficult engineering problems a Maintenance Engineer needs to understand the engineering design of their equipment and the science of their processes. It requires a person with the scientific knowledge to analyze the physics of a situation

you have to own a good background knowledge , and gain skills from more practice and follow the procedure as written in the service manual  and be collaborate with your colleague  by transfer information and experience.

You must know schedulle for maintenance like preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance with knowledge about spesific of equipment , trouble shooting of equipment.

One can be professional in maintenace by determining the type of maintenance required by the machinery, i.e preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, periodic maintenance etc. The process of maintenance can be a long process as well as short one depending on the condition of the mahinery to be maintained. If the periodic maintenance is done and maintenance log is maintained the chances of a break down are minimized by large margin and life of mating components experiencing forces is longer. 

A Maintenance Professional - Supervisor/Engineer , is last solution for a problem in the work site when the technician cannot handle the work. To prove that you are worth than the experienced technician in the site you must me thorough with the Operation and Maintenance Manual of the Concern Material and also with Google and Internet if the O&M Manual Can not give you the solution. Maintenance Professional must be so Fluent and confidence in his talking that if he cannot solve the issue he must call for the Manufacture's Service team and could explain what is the problem with the Machine
