A person who knows the exact meaning of the words, will definitely know the difference.

As sales, marketing & business development  have different functions, these words are3 different parts or requirement of business & its growth.  Eg : If your business is about cars, then

Sales figures will indicate the number of cars sold in a particular period.

Marketing induces the need of owing the car through publicity and informing the public that your car is better than others.  This is a strategy to draw attention towards your product.

Business development - The officers go out in the market to identify the existing opportunities and find out ways to create a requirement by working out ways to increase the need of owning the car.

This is a simple way of explaining the difference between the3 words.

Dear Waleed,

It's very simple by the way, just ask your team to market product, and then ask the same team to sell product, then tell them to give you a full report on what the difference between Marketing & Sales.

I'm always confident that practical experience and simulation is what makes a team work recognize the difference between sales and marketing.

Regarding your second part of question, Sales in one of the core business development role so to let your team know the difference you must ask them about the results.

Best Regards,

Sales and Business Development are actually the part of Marketing. Marketing means to provide value to the customer and get something in return. Now to provide value, you need to know what they need, accordingly you will plan your product. Once product is ready you will make strategies to make the product available for the customers and will find the opportunities to sell the product, this is called business development which is again a part of sales, when you identify a prospect (pre sales). Then comes the revenue generation part which is called sales. So marketing is not only selling or developing business, it is building and maintaining positive relationships with the customers, by identifying their need, making the product available, generating revenue and providing after sales services.
