Spool refers to a connected compressor, shaft and turbine.  Most turbofans/turbojets use a twin spool arrangement, ie a low pressure (LP) turbine, connected via an LP shaft to the LP compressor, and a high pressure  (HP) turbine connected via HP shaft to the HP compressor.  Rolls Royce large engines tend to use 3 spools
