The best server os for home server is Ubuntu server. We can get lot of guides for ubuntu through internet. Ease of use and security it is a best one. They regularly release security batches . Linux is the best choice.
It depends on the requirement.Windows has its pros and cons, as well as linux.
As it is for home server, Personally i will prefer Windows server with an antivirus package with Internet security ex: Norton 360 , Quickheal total security
as per security Linux is lot more secure than windows in linux there is no need to install Antivirus as of in windows antivirus is must to secure our information and files.

Windows is More common OS then Linux and is it more user friendly then Linux. it's support/help is very good.it is expensive then Linux.
Linux is on the other hand is open source OS and it open the window for developer to play around and tune it and customize. But it is good for a person familiar with Linux functions as it is little complex then windows . It is also free.
My personal Pick will be Linux as my Experience with Linux is Very good and the freedom it give to work around and customize. It is also more reliable then windows
If the user is not a power user windows OS is a apt one to use with less complexity compared to Linux. Else Linux would be the best option as it a open source In nature.Linux is more secure compared to Windows as it is vulnerable to attacks, where as linux is not.Linux is Free to use and more reliable.
Initially it purely depends on one's personal choice. A windows experienced guy will have windows & a linux guy will prefer linux. Personally I will go with Linux due to its GPL license, enhanced security & stability.
