You must remember that since televisions has been around, many parents would just leave their children in front of the TV and go ahead with what they want to do.  This made it easy for them to control the children, but it also exposed the children to many adult like stuff, although there can be some good educational programs.  But this could also lead to children being very inactive and not developing their social skills and physical skills.

Today, the computers, ipads, smartphones have become an obsession for many of the younger generation, exposing them to the internet.  Some kids access pornographic sites or adult material, while using their parents credit cards.

There is a good part that the children can learn more advance things technologically, but many of them become very anti-social because they are deprived from real human interaction, and in some cases creating a lot of socio- and psychopaths.

Parental control is very important, so that the child can spent time doing what is educationally developmental with the technology, but also spent time in real life to develop their social and motor skills.  Giving them time to play with other children, climb trees go to the park etc.
