No matter how smart and experienced you are, you still have to have a proper education -- one that is related to your field, simply because it empowers you with the tools and concepts you need in your day-to-day work.

Of course proper education gives one an edge over the one who is not properly educated.
He knows all the technical terms and and concepts required for putting the knowledge into practice.
