Six Sigma is a business process improvement methodology consisting of 5 steps: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. It uses lots of tools and techniques at each of 5 steps to make the exercise of problem solving / process improvement a scientific and breakthrough delivery mechanism. Some of the tools used in define phase are project charter, SIPOC, RACI matrix, voice of customers and GRPI model. Tools used in measure phase are Gage R&R, QFD, measurement system analysis etc. Some of the important tools in analyze phase are value strem mapping, histograms, pareto analysis, fishbone diagrams, root casue analysis, 5 whys, hypothesis testting, regression analysis, ANOVA and so on. Improvement phase tools are brainstorming, benchmarking, PDCA, DFSS, external / internal innovation etc. Analyze phase tools are control charts, mistake proofing, statistical process control charts, risk management, FMEAand process management charts.

Six sigma methodology uses lots of data and statistical analysis to find the root cause of the problem and uses other tools to arrive at best possible solution, implements it with the help of project team ans ensures sustainable benefits from the project.
