Decreasing working hours could be a positive motivator to increasing production depending on the maturity of the work force, the objectives of the organization and the expectations of management / leadership teams. However, it must be very carefully thought out otherwise the bottom line suffers and a culture of entitlement creeps in whereby employees now begin to take it as their right.

  • Support of management in this is very important. They must be sold out to the idea 100% and cannot penalize employees for it.
  • Communication on how it will be done is key.
  • It must be structured with set guidelines spelled out e.g.
    • Will it be the entire workforce?
    • Will it be reduced hours throughout a work week or reduced days instead?
    • Should an employee apply for it and await approval or can it be at will / ad hoc?
    • Can an employee be recalled to work to complete an assignment / task and will this then cause problems?

Overall, This is a good non-cash benefit motivator for hard working, disciplined and mature teams.

Decreasing working hours may give motivation to employ for better productivity but it depends upon job nature or working style of the organization also.

yes, if the work to be done is accomplished within the working time.

It is a motivation to go early from work and enjoy either the family life or social life or for some activities. However within the requested hours at work, one should be very productive and does his work efficiently.

If working more than the requested hours according to the law, it may happen that you are tired and cannot give the same result as a normal working day (productivity)
