Ventilation modes can be categorized in many different ways. From my experience, I prefer to divide them into volume controlled and pressure controlled.

Volume Controlled:

1) Assist-Control Ventilation (ACV)

2) Synchronized Intermittent-Mandatory Ventilation (SIMV)

Pressure Controlled:

1) Pressure-Controlled Ventilation (PCV)

2) Pressure Support Ventilation (PSV)

3) Pressure Controlled Inverse Ratio Ventilation (PCIRV)

4) Airway Pressure Release Ventilation (APRV)
