If all employees Skype accounts are created by the IT department, is it still an invasion of privacy if they record all conversations?

I think that, employees should be careful about using Skype , email accounts and passwords on employer owned equipment, because that information can be stored in backups, is visible to monitoring software and may not really be private at all.

It most definitely is! Even if the Skype account was created solely for the purpose of workplace communications, IT - or anyone in the company for that matter - does not have the right to record any conversation that is initiated through Skype. It is actually illegal, and unless they plan on facing a losing battle, they need to step down and create a policy of privacy.

IT department of an organization can monitor almost all activities of a staff as they are the one setting software and controlling it. Even if Skype is created for company work purpose it is rational on the part of an employee that he should not use it for some other purpose which may put him/her in trouble if recorded.
