Yes, I agree with all the answers, I only want to add that typography has a dual function of communication, through: - Meaning of letters / words, given by the vocabulary and language.
- Self design of the letter and typesetting, typography has a imagery function .
What you write has different Interpretations, depending on the typesetting and design when you chose the font to use.

in graphic design typography is what gets people to notice the add, the better the typeographic the better your design and not to mention that with typography you can explain what kind of product or company you'r designing for so without typography people might not understand what"s the purpose of your design and what it leads to, special when you'r designing a logo or a packege for a certain product.

Typography and Graphic Design were not so related in the past but now a days I believe if one learns typography that would help the career of this graphic designer a LOT, one can get to design a Hollywood standard posters / art work from designing a brochure for a cafe or small restaurant in suburbs, all the good art schools and institutes are educating the future graphic designers about the principles of typography, a lot of resources are also available online to learn that, plus I believe learning should never stop...
still water smells bad...so keep moving.
I believe when thinking like an expert of typography and using that knowledge for small projects even can make one opens up a huge horizon of things a person can achieve even expertise in other fields like infographics and web design...
