The history of behaviourism dates back to Pavlov's experiment with his dog to prove that "learning is habit formation." His dog learned that it was mealtime for him just by listening the sound of a bell: Just by hearing the sound of the bell, the dog would start salivating. In teaching a foreign language, behaviourism is "habit formation" through rote learning, extensive drills and repetition, with emphasis on exactness in pronunciation, in contrast to cognitivism which lays emphasis on clear understanding of things using cognitive faculties of our brain.
