Madness is but one of the themes in Hamlet, quite significant one, to be sure, but not the major theme. It is not exactly madness, but pretended madness that is working there. The central character pretends to be mad to delve deeper into something else. The major theme in Hamlet is man's reaction to feeling of guilt, a deeply psychological issue. It is directly related to humanity's ideas towards the origin of guilt itself, and the shaping of human culture: what is that our culture decides to be a guilt; why is it a guilt, and what are the evil consequences, for the whole of human race, if just one responsible man transcends the culturally allowed limits of behaviour.

Indeed! Madness is a prevalent theme throughout the play but with some ambiguity. Hamlet's madness is the most contentious because he seems to be sane at times especially when he arranges the play and asks  Horatio to observe his uncle. The other characters' madness ,Ophelia and Laertes, is less subtle, being the result of loss and bereavement.
