Design is all about communication. To be a good visual designer, one needs to understand how what we see communicates with us; how the different elements of design affect the viewer; and how to convey a message in the most effective way possible, without having to use a lot of words. Other than that, a solid command over the preferred design program(s) and the passion to work are essential.
2 things:
Familiarize yourself with Adobe Suite programs; main ones being Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, etc. These tools/softwar are very important for the beginners , however if you start teaching yourself now (and believe me, it will be at an advantage to you), then that will definitely put you more ahead in the game in terms of software knowledge & skill.
The main thing that is needed for being a designer is WANTING IT! It is pretty much same as for any kind of job/career. The rest of the story like creativity, talent, persistence etc., is just sporadic.
