I've gotten MCTS: managing projects certificate, which I wanted to do since I finished my MSc Project Management, but till now I didn't use it officially, do you think such certificates are useful and helpful in the practical world?
it is not usefull to be honest, no body is looking for Microsoft Project certified. it is easy to learn and all are expecting project managers to be expert in MS project without being certified as MS project training is part of PMP training.
if you're intersted in MS tools for PM, practically, certification in enterprise project management "EPM" software is more usefull
Knowledge is essential and it is easier with certificate. Certificate is a plus of course. but experience of leaders can be built with their own project Development by learning day after day on the spot by adjusting proper planning, which ones are mainly the same steps and revolving actions.
MS Project is usually used in the project management activities of big projects. Instead of certification, knowledge is very important.
it depends on what type of companies u r working , and what title position u r having , u will feel that u r a project mngr , when u r involved in the project and controlling all the process , having a certificate or Ms does nt give that feeling til u r the one who runs the show . If u wanna be a pjct mngr , ask them to give the position which is the heart of the co. Or the the position of the main idea of the co . Get up behind ur chair , and work at the field . The certifcate is smthing will be an addtion after a good experience ,or smthing to help us to get promoted .
Some companies have a dedicated project planner/scheduler, or it would be a project engineer responsibility, who would need to be knowledgable in all aspects related to the software used, MS project is one of those, and if your company uses it, and you are in such role, then go ahead. It would be useful to anyone, as learning by experience would not teach you all the functionalities of the software.
Short courses are useful in career development.
In this particular case, it will add value to your profile as you already have done MSc in Project Management. In practical life too, it can help you to use the MS Project more conveniently and efficiently.
I think it would help. To be honest, I haven't seen much of REAL experts in Microsoft Project in my last4+ years of core Project management. Scheduling is really key in projects, How do you plan your plan?:-), How to manage critical paths, update changes, resource split, Multiple baselines, make it not much complex but update right data, Resource leveling, Getting reports out of plan, EVM calculation etc etc... are really key for complex projects... Suggest writing a blog based on your learnings and share with the project management community so that it helps us too! Good luck.

Well, I am a Linux Geek so maybe I can't really answer that question :)
However, if you ask me, it is not about what certificates do you have, it is about what 'skills' do you have :)
I could have10 certificates but have not even one skill that could help in that area so what is the point? that certificate would be totally helpless.
I do understand that companies as for that but I have different point of view. I have passion that can create for me unique skills and I can be a very good player among others :)
MS project course and its contents will help you inshaalah to plan, manage, consolidate and communicate information about the project efficiently whereas the certificate just an other piece of paper.
